Discover the bathroom vanities backstory

There’s no doubt the vanity is the centrepiece of a bathroom, but did you know vanities originated in bedrooms?
Back in the day before plumbing existed, tables with a built-in basin, where people could wash their hands and faces, were located in bedrooms. These tables were called toilet tables.
Once modern-day plumbing was invented, toilet tables were placed in bathrooms. Their name changed over time, as well, to “dressing tables” and then “vanity tables.” We think the word “vanity” is in the name because people used (and continue to use) vanities to help themselves look their best — playing into their vanity, so to speak.
Today’s vanities come in a variety of sizes and styles, and many feature a storage compartment to help maximize space and convenience in your bathroom.
